What is meant by a study permit?
A study permit is an official document that enables foreign nationals to receive educational services at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada. We would highly recommend That prior to applying for a study permit you ensure you have all the documents you will need.
Will you be allowed to go back home while studying?
If you decide you want to leave Canada during a scheduled break (for example the summer or winter holidays and spring break), the authorities may require you to present proof you are enrolled in the school once you come back to Canada. If you return to Canada on:
- a visa: make sure it is still valid.
- an electronic travel authorization (eTA), and you make your trip to and from Canada by air, you will need to check if it is still valid.
Who is eligible to apply for study permit?
You can easily further your educational career in Canada if you:
- are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI)
- Provide evidence that you can pay for your:
- tuition fees
- living expenses for yourself and any accompanying family member
- return transportation for yourself and any accompanying family member
- Follow all Canadian rules and regulations, do not have a criminal record and will not be a security risk to Canada.
- are in good health.
- Successfully persuade the immigration officer that you will depart from Canada once your students end.
Can you work while studying?
You can find a job without a work permit on your school campus if you:
- are a full-time post-secondary student at:
- a public post-secondary school or CEGEP in Quebec
- a private college-level school in Quebec that follows the same rules as public schools, and is at least 50% funded by government grants, or
- a Canadian private school that can legally award degrees under provincial law
- have a valid study permit and
- have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)?
You will no longer be allowed to work once your permit expires or you are no longer a full-time student.
